:: IWC Portuguese Watch

IWC first introduced the Portuguese watch in the early 1930’s. Two businesspersons from Portugal inspired IWC’s horologers in Schaffhausen to develop the Portuguese watch. The Portuguese watch was reintroduced in 1993 in a numbered edition. Over the next twelve years, IWC introduced six more versions. Nowadays, The Portuguese collection comprises the Automatic 2000, Chrono-Automatic, Minute Repeater, Perpetual Calendar, and Tourbillon.

Watch collectors like the Portuguese partly for its nice round case. The Portuguese Automatic also features a vintage and neat design. The case measuring 42.30mm has two subdials, one for the seconds, and one for the 7-day power reserve. The date window is carefully set at the six o’clock position. The Arabic hour markers are small enough not to encumber the face but large enough to provide excellent legibility. IWC makes the Automatic Portuguese of steel, rose gold and platinum. The Chrono-Automatic Portuguese features the same neat design as the Automatic but the chrono seconds and hour subdials are set at 12 and 6 o’clock. Both versions are offered with white or black faces.

The latest addition to the collection is the F.A Jones Edition. The famous company designed this watch to pay tribute to Mr. Florentine Ariosto Jones, the horologer from Boston who started IWC. This timekeeper is designed for watch collectors. The watchcase and big oval shaped winding crown provide this watch with a particularly antique feel. The white face has large hour markers with a beautiful font that has a very 1920’s retro look. The IWC logo and Mr. Jones signature are inscribed under the twelve o’clock marker.

The Portuguese Minute Repeater is presented in both a skeleton and non-skeleton version. The Skeleton Minute Repeater is a remarkable horological masterwork. Every movement of this timepiece is observable from the front and back of the watchcase. IWC’s Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is another wristwatch from the collection. Only produced in rose gold with a black face, the Perpetual Calendar shows the date, day, month, and moon phase. It has a 7-day power reserve indicator and a second’s subdial.
