At Baselworld 2004 Ferdinand Porsche AG, Stuttgart unveiled the new Porsche Design Indicator watch to the public – a luxuriously designed watch combining chronograph functions with a
mechanical digital display for the first time. It was made possible due to what is currently the most complex, series-production watch movement in the world inside this timekeeper.

The Porsche Design Indicator is a cutting edge innovation in the world of mechanical timepieces, as it shows stopped time intervals up to 10 hours in large numerals. It was developed by the Swiss watchmaker Eterna SA, Grenchen, which is owned by the designer and Porsche Supervisory Board member, Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. To provide the Porsche Design Indicator’s usual functions, the company’s watchmakers selected a mechanical movement based on the automatic-caliber ETA/Valjoux-7750. But, the design of the main plate and bridges is absolutely new. To keep the overall height as low as possible, the Eterna watchmakers deliberately avoided a simple modular construction in favor of an inbuilt solution. To accomplish this, well over 400 different parts had to be newly developed and fitted into special separator components. As a result, the sophisticated movement of this chronograph is made up of over 800 separate parts.

The design of the Porsche Design Indicator deliberately features the styling of high performance Carrera GT sport cars. It represents drive, accuracy, power, contemporary technology, and excellence. The housing is made of the light but very rugged material called titanium. The watchcase is water-resistant up to 164 feet; it measures an impressive diameter of 49 millimeters and a thickness of 18 millimeters.

Like the first Porsche Design titanium watch of the 1980s, the buttons on the new Porsche Design Indicator chronograph are oblong, imitating the design of the Porsche Carrera GT's pedals: full-length cross ribbing betters grip, and a two-to-one lever ratio makes the stop-button very user-friendly.

On the caseback, fixed with six screws, a sapphire crystal allows you to view the big winding rotor. This, like all watch models in the new collection from Porsche Design, is weight-optimized: the blade of the rotor has been skillfully made of titanium on the inside, which provides a low mass while offering a high level of rigidness. But on the outside, the blade is made of solid red gold, to produce the required winding energy for the four spring barrels. The rotor's design is based on the appearance of a Carrera GT wheel rim.

This sporty chronograph has a tough, but comfortable, soft natural rubber band with a secure double hook clasp. On the inside, the black band looks a lot like the tread of the first-class tires on a Porsche Carrera GT. This is not just pleasant to look at, but also provides functional benefits: the tread grooves allow the skin to breathe, thus lowering sweat output.
